stephane grenier - Biography
The most effective leaders understand one fundamental truth: behind every organizational challenge is a human one. Stéphane Grenier has spent more than four decades putting that belief into practice.
For more than 25 years, Stéphane has helped shape the evolution of workplace mental health and peer support in Canada. His career has taken him from some of the world's most demanding military environments to boardrooms, healthcare systems, governments, first responders and major employers across Canada and internationally. Throughout that journey, one principle has remained constant: when it comes to mental health, resilience and organizational culture, people themselves remain one of our greatest untapped resources.
Over the past five years, an increasingly important part of Stéphane's work has focused on Canada's construction industry, particularly in Ontario, the country's largest province and home to one of its largest and most diverse construction workforces. Working closely with industry leaders and organizations, he has gained a first-hand appreciation of both the challenges facing construction workers and the tremendous opportunity to rethink how mental health, substance use and suicide are addressed across the sector.
That work has reinforced a belief shaped over decades: we cannot crisis-intervene our way out of these challenges. Support must begin earlier, closer to where people live and work, and with greater recognition of the role co-workers and trained peers can play alongside professional services.
Following groundbreaking work within the Canadian Armed Forces, Stéphane was seconded by the Mental Health Commission of Canada to lead the development of Canada's National Standards of Practice for Peer Support. He later co-founded the organization now known as Peer Support Canada, helping establish the national accreditation and certification framework for peer support.
Today, as Founder and CEO of Mental Health Innovations (MHI), Stéphane leads the design and implementation of large-scale peer support and workplace mental health initiatives across multiple sectors. His work increasingly explores how practical learning, peer support, suicide prevention and technology can work together to create more accessible human support, particularly in complex and highly mobile workforces such as construction.
His leadership has been recognized with the Order of Canada, the Meritorious Service Cross and two honorary Doctor of Laws degrees. He is also the author of After the War: Surviving PTSD and Changing Mental Health Culture, chronicling both his personal recovery and his commitment to changing how we support one another.
Before founding MHI, Stéphane served nearly 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring as a Lieutenant-Colonel. His military career shaped the philosophy that continues to guide his work today: strong cultures are built through trust, courage, humility and human connection.
For Stéphane, the opportunity facing construction is not simply to create more programs. It is to unlock the enormous human capacity that already exists across the industry and make support part of the way people look out for one another, every day.

?Stephane was the most inspiring speaker that my employees have ever had the pleasure of listening to. He was incredible and well worth the wait. I am already looking forward to next years event! "

"Now more than ever, the mental health of our people is a critical responsibility for all leaders. Stephane is a powerful speaker, who brings personal experience and academic rigour to the why and the how of promoting mental health. His presentation was among the most "impactful I have seen in recent memory."
-Sean Drygas, President, Bullfrog Power
"At one of our recent CEO Roundtable Discussions, Stéphane Grenier shared practical ways in which we can help those silently struggling among us; ways by which we can improve not just our companies, but our society at large. I encourage every CEO…every leader… to take the time to learn more from Stéphane and his team at MHI. To do so may be both life-changing and life-saving."
-John Wilson, Founder &CEO Global Network
"The energy that was given to the audience was amazing! It was personal, not just a clinical talk. Absolutely FANTASTIC message. You kept a HUGE topic simple. And what you talked about made sense. It just made sense! Thank you!!"

"I heard you speak at the safety conference in Winnipeg last week. Before you started I thought 'oh another mental health speaker' expecting to hear all the same dry terminologies we have heard at other similar events. I was delighted to discover this was not just another mental health speech - it was a refreshing approach to how we can help each other through the rough spots in life. I appreciated your message, value the investment you have made to our country in both your service in our military and the efforts you are making to improve others' lives. Thank you for making the last session of the day so enjoyable, even fighting off the flu I was able to laugh at your jokes and absorb some excellent info.
Keep up the great work!"

"I have great respect for Stephane who is taking an active role in helping the world understand where we, as a society, fall down when it comes to looking out for each other and providing connections that support recovery. I especially love how he normalized mental health. He certainly has devoted a lot of time to understanding his experiences and I greatly admire him for speaking out and doing something to spare others. Amazing, really!!"
