RICHARD MARKER - BIOGRAPHY

Richard Marker is an internationally recognized speaker, educator, author, and advisor on philanthropy.  

Philanthropy Advisor: Since 2002, he has been co-principal of Wise Philanthropy, a philanthropy advisory firm that works with foundations, families, and philanthropists on strategy and evaluation. He has developed a distinctive approach to philanthropy strategy, now used by many in the field, and has written extensively about philanthro-ethics, a term he coined.

Philanthropy Educator: He teaches philanthropists and foundation professionals through the Wise Philanthropy Institute, the education arm of Wise Philanthropy. In 2016, he assumed the part-time role as Faculty Co-Director of a prestigious high-end funder education program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for High Impact Philanthropy.  Since 2000, he has been a part-time Associate Professor at NYU.  He has received NYU’s Outstanding Educator Award.  That program taught over 2000 funders from 26 nations. 

Speaker:  As a long time professional member of the National Speakers Association/Global Speakers Federation, Marker has lectured in 39 countries on 5 continents and in 40 of the United States. In 2016, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the National Speakers Association-New York Chapter.

Writer:  Marker writes a popular blog “Wise Philanthropy” and is the author of “Saying ‘Yes’ Wisely: Insights for the Thoughtful Philanthropist.”  [Blooming Twig Books, 2009, 2011]] He has been quoted in many prominent periodicals and publications around the world. 

Background: Over the course of his career Marker has been CEO of the Bronfman/Seagram Foundation, a trustee of several others, a professor at Brown, Hofstra, and Loyola Chicago in addition to Penn and NYU, Principal of The Solutions Group, International VP of the Hillel Foundation,, and a chaplain at Brown University. In addition to his professional work, Marker has served in leadership roles on a wide variety of volunteer and foundation boards including terms as chair of 2 international interreligious organizations.

Marker has degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, the Jewish Theological Seminary, and Brown University. He is married to his partner in Wise Philanthropy, Mirele B. Goldsmith, PhD, is the father of Adam, an EEO attorney in Washington, DC, and is the grandfather of Aiden.
