HARRIS SUSSMAN - BIOGRAPHY

Harris Sussman was at the March on Washington in 1963 and has been a leading voice on cultural diversity ever since.  He was on the staff of the SCLC during the Poor Peoples Campaign in 1968.   He taught 9th grade Civics in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  In the 1970s he created the Mountain Heritage School in West Virginia and then he was a co-founder of Prescott Center for Alternative Education in Arizona where he was a faculty member and vice president, and then was Co-Director of the Southwest Field Training Project supported by the Federal FIPSE agency.  In the 1980s he was futurist-in-residence at Digital Equipment Corporation and educational strategist where he produced and directed "Decision Point," which won Best Interactive Computer Project in the US.   In the 1990s he wrote "Diversity Questions and Answers" for the national publication "Managing Diversity."  He was keynote speaker to many groups throughout the US and in Mexico, Canada, Russia, Samoa, Costa Rica.  From 2005-2013 he was executive director of the only international humanitarian project helping blind students in Russia, providing more than 1000 white canes and voice recorders. 

Dr. Sussman went to Antioch College and was a copyboy at the Washington Post during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  His Master's Degree is from the Cambridge-Goddard Graduate Program in Social Change.  His Ph.D. Is from Union Graduate School. 

He has published two and a half books on diversity and four collections of poetry.  He attended a one-room school in Vermont where he raised chickens in the 4-H Club. 

He lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.
