About
Paula Hartzell, M.D.:
Dr. Paula Hartzell, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, is a family
physician with previous experience as a naval flight officer and
naval leadership instructor. She draws on these experiences to
captivate the audience using stories with a point. Using memorable
examples constructed with engineering precision, she delivers
her message with the warmth of a family doctor.
Dr. Hartzell began attending the U.S. Naval Academy as a non-swimmer,
and achieved the excellent swimming skills required for graduation.
Her subsequent completion of naval flight training required even
more advanced swimming skills. Drills included escape from simulated
underwater aircraft crashes – while blindfolded. Her journey
through this training provides humorous examples for problem-solving
and managing stress during extreme adversity.
After flight training, Dr. Hartzell navigated aircraft in Antarctica
and served as a division officer supervising 40 enlisted personnel.
She then returned to the Naval Academy as a leadership instructor.
After her naval service, Dr. Hartzell transitioned to a career
in medicine. She independently completed biology and chemistry
studies required to attend medical school. She completed her training
as a family physician and now practices medicine in Joplin, Missouri.
During her medical practice, Dr. Hartzell has been impressed
by the dramatic impact of lifestyle choices on the health of patients.
She became interested in facilitating positive changes to reduce
stress, improve health, and increase productivity.
In conducting presentations on lifestyle issues, she became aware
that leadership issues were a major source of stress, both for
employees and for managers. Dr. Hartzell incorporated her leadership
background with her medical experience and expanded her offerings
to include leadership and professional training. She is well equipped
to address the interaction of professional stressors and lifestyle
from either angle.
