Dr. Jim Morris D.Ed.

Several speaking topics that Jim feels would be of interest and benefit to a variety of healthcare professionals as well as the general public are:
1. Why don't they just quit? The smoking conundrum.
A thought provoking look at why in this day and age people continue to smoke. Using  power point and his guitar the Quit Coach does his best to answer this perplexing question.
2.  Carbon Monoxide - the Silent Killer in Cigarette Smoke.
Using a power point presentation, which includes case studies and demonstrations, the Quit Coach illustrates why lung cancer is not the only health concern smokers should have.
3.  Risk Factors for Heart Disease - Risk Factors by the Number.
The Quit Coach uses a power point presentation to discuss the non-modifiable and the modifiable risk factors for heart disease. The audience participates with a lifestyle test and discussion. He concludes by summarizing with his guitar and the song he has written:
"Heart Disease by the Number - Risk Factors by the Score"
4.  Motivational Interviewing - The Quit Coach Style.
Dr. Jim illustrates how he has adapted MI to his practice with smokers. By simplifying this counseling method for smokers the Quit Coach encourages smokers to take ownership of their smoking behavior. He "motivates" his patients/clients to practice being non-smokers - one-day-at-a-time. The presentation includes role playing and audience participation.
5. Pregnancy and Smoking
This is the most difficult part of the Coach's practice - young pregnant women who continue to smoke in spite of knowing the dangers.  Lots of ideas and sharing.

Jim has worked with Supportive Care in the Nicotine Dependence Centre since 2001. He has a Doctorate of Education in Health, Physical Education and Counselling from the University of Oregon, and taught at Lakeview High School and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay for many years.

Jim’s interest in the area of smoking cessation is evident. He has trained at the Mayo Clinic for certification in Nicotine Dependence Counselling, and with the Arizona Department of Health for Certification as a Tobacco Cessation Specialist and Tobacco Treatment Specialist.

Jim also volunteers with Thunder Bay’s Heart and Stroke Foundation and Tobacco Free Thunder Bay, sits on the Cancer Care Ontario Regional Council and Networks, and volunteers with the Ontario Tobacco-Free Network.

In 2005, Jim was awarded the Community Service Award from the Ontario Medical Association, and in 2006 received the Heather Crowe Award from the Ministry of Health Promotion
